Innkeepers Gene and Carol Tish
Innkeepers Gene and Carol Tish abandoned retired life to launch the Garibaldi House after drawing inspiration from their travels.
A well-traveled couple
The two had stayed in a variety of hotels, B&Bs and resorts throughout the country, including in San Diego and Palm Springs, when they visited New York City and had lunch at the Central Park Plaza. Hotel restaurant staff had decorated with seasonal flowers, including sweet lilies and azaleas. And while they were impressed by the pink and white presentation, it was the floral scent that stuck with them, according to Carol.
Taking a cue from The Plaza
When the Tishes bought the Garibaldi House, they took a cue from the Plaza and made sure that the hotel always had wonderful aromas that surrounded the guests. “Gene does it with food,” said Carol. When guests arrive and smell onions sautéing as Gene preps for one of his signature weekend appetizers, all of which he prepares from scratch onsite, they often say, “Where is the restaurant in this hotel?” said Carol.
The Tishes take pride in their staff
In addition to cooking, Gene, a former attorney, works the front desk and trains Garibaldi House employees. The Tishes take pride in the fact that many of their employees go on to obtain college degrees or continue to work in the lodging industry in larger markets.
Carol decorates Garibaldi House for many of the holidays
Carol, meanwhile, decorates, including during the holidays, and oversees cleaning, eschewing harsh chemicals for old-fashioned laundry and room cleaning methods.
Both Gene and Carol actively support the community of Garibaldi and Tillamook County in general. Gene, who has served on a number of local tourism-related committees, earned Tillamook County’s 2013 Strategic Vision Award for the Economy for his work in promoting tourism in the region.
